What Is Dynamic Watermarking?

What Is Dynamic Watermarking?

Security Culture-1

Sharing content is easy. Email and social media have made it simple to download, post and view content regularly. However, not all of the content that is viewed was supposed to be shared. With increasingly advanced software and more savvy viewers, more and more confidential content is being exposed, stolen or illegally altered. Unfortunately, it can be difficult or expensive to track content to know exactly where it was leaked and, once it has been leaked, there is no getting that content back.

Dynamic watermarking is one option for those who want to better protect their content. A dynamic watermark is an image or text that is overlaid on selected content and can change based on a set of factors. A dynamic watermark can display something as simple as the date or offer more protection by displaying a viewer’s contact information such as name or email address.

Static vs. Dynamic Watermarks

A static watermark is used as a way to trace content back to its original source, but is often used as a way to try to protect content. These digital watermarks are commonly seen on photographs or television shows. A static watermark is generally a logo, name or phrase that remains the same on the content each time it is viewed. Stock photos have static watermarks placed on them to try to deter viewers from stealing the image and, many times, television networks place their logo in the bottom corner of the screen of a t.v. show so that it may be traced back to the rightful owner.

Dynamic watermarking can also be a logo, name or phrase, but it has the ability to change. For example, a phrase could be displayed in a different language based on the location in which a piece of content is viewed, or the name of the viewer can appear on a confidential document.

A dynamic watermark adds an extra layer of security that a static watermark is unable to provide. For a confidential video, a viewer’s name or email address can be displayed on the video deterring them from recording or sharing that video.

Because dynamic watermarks change, they offer more protection and are much more difficult to remove from content than a static watermark. Dynamic watermarks lead to less illegal sharing and altering than static watermarks.

Digital watermarks have grown in popularity as a simple way to add a level of security to a video, image, PDF or other important file. They’re easy to apply and take time and skill to remove. Having to remove a watermark decreases the likelihood that a piece of content will be misused.

Because dynamic watermarks change based on different factors when opened, they provide extra security to important or confidential content that isn’t meant to be shared or altered. Dynamic watermarking can be effective on its own, but works best when combined with other security measures such as file encryption and tracking.
